What is PRP?
Platelet-rich plasma therapy, often referred to as just PRP, is a medical treatment used in the treatment of hair loss and also in skin rejuvenation. The process involves drawing your blood, spinning it down in a centrifuge to separate the components of your blood, and then injecting the plasma acquired from your blood into the treatment area. It may also be used topically after a microneedling treatment.
Why choose PRP?
PRP has become an increasingly popular treatment for hair loss. There is thought that both the trauma of injection as well as the growth factors being injected in the platelet portion of the blood, stimulate hair growth as long as the hairs have not fully miniaturized and disappeared. Cosmetically for skin rejuvenation, the growth factors are thought to stimulate collagen production and help to improve complexion and skin quality.
What does PRP feel like?
There is pain associated with needle entry and and the injection of the platelet-rich plasma itself burns a bit. There are mulitple injection sites as usually larger treatment areas are treated. A cooling device and/or vibration can be used to control the pain and are usually sufficient for pain control.
When will I see results from PRP?
Multiple PRP sessions are likely necessary to see optimal results, especially when treating hair loss. After four treatment sessions, each about 4-6 weeks apart, patients should see improvement within the following 3-4 months. Facial rejuvenation begins to appear within three to four weeks with continuous improvement thereafter.
Am I a good candidate for PRP?
PRP is not recommended for patients on blood thinners, those with blood disorders, blood cancer, HIV or AIDS, or hepatitis C. Ideal candidates are healthy, non-smoking adults. Schedule a consultation to see if PRP is the right treatment for you.
