What is IPL therapy?
Intense pulsed light (IPL) is a therapy that uses multiple wavelengths of light to heat up cells inside to skin and safely destroy them. The body then disposes these cells naturally. This reveals clearer, healthier skin that’s glowing and youthful.
Why choose IPL therapy?
There are many reasons a patient would choose to receive IPL treatments as it addresses a variety of skin concerns. IPL in particular is great for reducing many pigmenatary concerns as well as redness in the skin. However, there are limitations on whom the treatment can be performed on based on skin type and color. A consultation will be very helpful to see if you are a good candidate.
What does IPL therapy feel like?
When the IPL fires, the energy feels like a strong snap on the skin that has been compared to a rubber band being snapped against your skin. Most patients state that the treatments are not painful and quite tolerable. A cooling device and cool gel are both used during treatment to decrease any discomfort felt during the procedure.
When will I see results from IPL therapy?
Immediately after treatment, dark areas will be darker and red areas will be redder. Over the course of 4-6 weeks, small black dots will form and as time passes, there will be fading of the dark spots and red spots on the face. The number of treatment sessions is variable to each patient based on level of present sun damage, patient expectations, and skin type. All patients will notice improvement with each treatment but it may take multiple treatments to reach the end point a patient desires. Avid sun protection is paramount to longer lasting results.
Am I a good candidate for IPL therapy?
Patients with very dark or recently tanned skin will not be able to be treated with IPL as it targets pigment generally. Ideal candidates are healthy adults who do not have skin cancer or have any light sensitivites from underlying conditions or medications. Call for a consultation to determine whether IPL is safe and a good option for you.
