What is Botox?
Botox is the brand name for a cosmetic injectable made from a purified form of onabotulinumtoxin A, a neurotoxin that paralyzes muscles. In well trained hands, these products can be used to paralyze small muscles of the face to reduce wrinkle formation. There are multiple other brands using the exact same toxin with just slightly different carrier proteins only slightly changing their molecular behavior. Most studies show equivalent results with any of the brand names available today (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, Jeuveau). There is a newer agent that has just been FDA approved (Daxxify) that may have longer results than the current neurotoxins on the market.
Why choose botulinum toxin treatment?
These treatments are safe, minimally invasive solutions to reduce wrinkles. They have also been found adjunctively to change the density of muscles, activity of sweat glands, and the way that collagen is deposited in the skin. They can be used in multiple areas of the face and neck.
What do injections feel like?
There can be mild pain from the needle but vibration and ice are usually sufficient for pain control. Any time a needle enters the skin, there is risk of mild bruising but precautions like abstaining from alcohol a few days prior to procedure and stopping all ibuprofen like products as well as unnecessary herbal supplements two weeks prior to the injection can decrease that risk. There is minimal swelling or other major complications. Within a few hours after injection, you can return back to your complete normal routine, including exercise.
When will I see results from injections?
Results are seen two weeks post injection, and things continue to improve over the months after injection. For deep set wrinkles, multiple series injections, to maintain paralysis, may be needed to see improvement. Each injection (excluding Daxxify, which is not yet widely available) last approximately 3-4 months.
Am I a good candidate for neurotoxin injection?
Ideal candidates are healthy, non-smoking adults over the age of 18 with realistic goals and expectations about treatment. Patients who are pregnant or nursing should not receive botulinum toxin injection.
